Artist of the year

On Tuesday, April 25, 2017, the American Friends of Museums in Israel is hosting its Annual Cocktail Reception in the Villard Mansion at the New York Palace. At this reception the board, which includes the artist James Rosenquist, will recognize Ruud van Empel as our “Artist of the Year” for the strong impact his works of Art have made around the globe. Past recipients of this prestigious honor include Thomas Ruff, Jeff Koons, John Baldessari, Sol Lewitt, James Rosenquist, Jim Dine, Davis LaChapelle and Robert Indiana.

Exhibition in Atlanta

On April 28, 2017, Jackson Fine Art will open the third solo exhibition of Ruud van Empel at their Gallery in Atlanta. His first exhibition was in 2006. They will show new works made in 2015 to 2017, the series are titled Mood and Analogy. The artist will be present at the opening.

Rijks Museum

In November 2016 four photo-works by Ruud van Empel have been taken into the photo-collection of the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the works are titled: World#1 2005, World#13 2006, Untitled#2 2004 and Reflexion 2010.

Gallery show with portraits

Ruud van Empel will show a new series of portraits in 2 gallery shows coming up in 2017, the first is at Beetles + Huxley in London opening on Februari 21, and the second show is in the United States at Jackson Fine Art opening in March 2017.

Joods Historisch Museum

The Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam (NL) is organizing an exhibition about conceptualisation titled Face it! ( oordelen op het eerste gezicht ) Ruud van Empel will be participating with 3 large works in this exhibition that will be open from December 19, 2016 to April 16, 2017.

NRW Forum Düsseldorf

New trends in photography: the exhibition “Bling Bling Baby” will present the new, colourful world of photography. From Glam Fashion to nature poems, from the ironic representation to pop portraits – the past few years have seen the emergence of a fascinating canon of images which celebrate the artificial and do not shy away from kitsch. The international group exhibition that includes photographers such as David LaChapelle and Ruud van Empel will be on show at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf from the 19th of November 2016 until the 15th of January 2017.

Ode to Jan Mankes!

On special request of Museum Belvedere in Heerenveen (NL) Ruud van Empel made a Photowork inspired on the work of Jan Mankes, together with another 100 artist. The works can be seen in the museum from 23 september to 30 October 2016. All these works will be auctioned a from 20 oktober to 30 oktober. The work has an edition of 1/1.

3rd annual FotoIstanbul

Ruud van Empel is part of the Istanbul International Photography Festival that takes place from 1 to 30th oktober 2016. With 56 photographers attending from around the world, art-lovers will be filled with photography with countless activities for a month of festival and celebrations. Some other photographers are Nick Brandt and Sandro Miller.

Festival of Belo Horizonte, Brazil

The work of Ruud van Empel will be on display at the TRANSVERSAL exhibition in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.This public space images circuit is part of the International Photography Festival and takes place from 15 October to 27 November 2016, and they will show a special selection from the “World” series. The project “TRANSVERSAL - Public Space Images Circuit “ is an open air exhibition aiming to insert poetic interferences in the visual field of the city, destined to the general population.

MoPA, San Diego

The work of Ruud van Empel will be part of the exhibition “Beauty and the beast: animal in photography, the exhibition can be seen in the Becky Moores Center for Visual Learning - Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, USA.

Behind a painted smile

In the Vishal, space for Contemporary Art, Haarlem, the Netherlands will open a group exhibition with works from Katinka Lampe, Sam Dilemans, Hans de Bruijn, Folkert de Jong, Annemiek Vera and Ruud van Empel. The exhibition is curated by Hans de Bruijn and it shows portraits in a broad sense, The exhibition will open on Januari 29 at 17.00 hours and closes on March 7, 2016

Solo exhibition Souvernir d’Intime

From March 12 to April 30 Ruud van Empel will show new works at Flatland Gallery. The series are Souvenir d’Intime and Still Life. Souvenir d’intime is a sequel to the Souvenir series which are about his childhood. Still Life is a series of works that focusses on the Vanitas theme. On the occasion of this exhibition a catalogue will be published in which all works are listed.

Gallery Beetles + Huxley

Ruud van Empel will have his first solo exhibition at London based Gallery Beetles + Huxley, they will show a number of works from the Theatre and the World series. The Exhibition will open on June 2 and will last to 27 th June, 2015

Biennial FotoArtFestival in Poland

The Biennial FotoArtFestival (FAF) in Bielsko-Biała, Poland will organize a Solo exhibition during the 2015 edition and which will take place from the 16th till the 31st October. They will show a selection of 40 works by Ruud van Empel and is curated by Inez Baturo.

Photo PhnomPenh in Cambodia

The French curator Christian Caujolle will show a selection of the works of Ruud van Empel on the 2015 edition of Photo PhnomPenh in Cambodia. The opening will be on January 31st. The works will be presented outside in the City or at the Royal University of Fine Arts.

New works presented in galleries

New works by Ruud van Empel will be presented at Flatland Gallery, Amsterdam The Netherlands. The opening will take place on September 13, 2014. On September 19 Jackson Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta USA will open their show of new works by Ruud van Empel, and Stux Gallery will show Ruud van Empels latest works in their new location on 24 West 57th street New York USA, the opening will take place on October 30, 2014.


Fotografiska, The Photographic Museum in Stockholm will make a large exhibition of the photoworks of Ruud van Empel. This first solo-exhibition of Ruud van Empel in Sweden will show 72 works. The exhibition will open on March 9 and will last until June 2, 2013.

Photographic Museum of Antwerpen

The Photographic Museum of Antwerpen will show the photoworks of Ruud van Empel. Joachim Naudts is the curator of this first solo-exhibition of Ruud van Empel in Belgium and he will show 70 works The exhibition will open on June 28 and will last until October 6, 2013.

Exhibition at the MoPA, San Diego

The Museum of Photographic Arts MoPA in San Diego is making an exhibition with the photoworks of Ruud van Empel. Director Deborah Klochko is the curator of this first solo-exhibition of Ruud van Empel in the US. They will show over 40 works and will open on October 12, 2012 and will last until February 1, 2013. The exhibition will be accompied by a catalogue.

Noordbrabants Museum

The Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch (The Netherlands) will re-open his doors on May 24, 2013 In one of their first exhibitions in 2014 they will show new photoworks of Ruud van Empel. The exhibition will be curated by Maureen Trappeniers.

Exhibition at Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum will make an oeuvre exhibition of the photoworks of Ruud van Empel. This first large exhibition will show over 80 works and will open on September 10 and go's on until November 27 2011. The exhibition will be accompied by a catalogue.

Vintage works in exhibition

Flatland Gallery in Utrecht, The Netherlands, is organizing the first Vintage exhibition with the early works of Ruud van Empel made from 1995-2003. There will also be one work dating from 1983, an original handprinted work which is the very first photo artwork he produced.

On January 29 th. the third solo exhibition of Ruud van Empel opens at Stux Gallery in New York. There his new series titled Dawn and Souvenir can be seen for the first time. New book with new works from Ruud van Empel

In January there will be a new book coming out with new series such as Dawn, Souvenir and Monument. Dutch Art-historian Maartje van den Heuvel (Prentenkabinet Leiden NL) has written a text about the history of the works by Ruud van Empel and writes about his technique and subjects, but also gives an analyses of all the critisism that has been on his work throughout the world in these last few years. A very interesting essay.

Exhibition at LGP Prague

The director from Leica Gallery Prague Jana Bömer has asked Ruud van Empel to exhibit his work in her exhibition space.The exhibition will open on 15 th of January and will last until April 18 th 2009. LGP is a photography gallery with a broadly envisioned concept: Its exhibition program focuses on the best that the international photography scene has to offer. As a nonprofit organization, the gallery touches upon important social issues through its program and it helps people to orientate in the contemporary world through cultural experiences.

Exclusive new work

Ruud van Empel was invited to make an exclusive work for a portfolio for the Elton John Aids Foundation. The portfolio will consist of 10 artists and the size will be 20x24 inches. A number of artists who are friends of Eltons have also committed. These include Thomas Struth, Damien Hirst, Sally Mann, Sam Taylor-Wood, Phillip Lorca-DiCorcia, Nan Goldin, and Richard Misrach. The portfolio will be introduced at the annual Elton John Oscar Party in Hollywood on February 22nd 2009.

Exhibition at Museum Kunst Palast Düsseldorf

On Oktober 24th, 2008 the exhibition Diana and Actaeon, the forbidden glimpse of the naked body was opend by director Beat Wismer at the Museum KunstPalast in Düsseldorf, Germany. Ruud van Empel is present with one work in this exhibitions that runs through February 15, 2009.

Exhibition at Kunstverein Halle, Germany

Ruud van Empel had the honor to show his works in the summer of 2008 at the Kunstverein "Talstrasse" e.V. in Halle (Saale) by invitation of Matthias Rataiczyk and Christin Müller-Wenzel. The exhibition was opend by Angelika Honsbeek, Kulturattacheé from the Dutch embassy, Berlin. He presented him with a beautiful bouquet made specially for him by Geer Pouls from Gallery Brutto Gusto Berlin. Than Art Historian Christoph Kivelitz made a speech about the history and works of Ruud van Empel.
After this there was a presentation with works from students Fashion Design Der Burg Giebichenstein Art University for Art & Design Halle, in the style of the portrait of Ruud van Empel. The exhibition is from July 24 to Oktober 5, 2008.
